Addictions Counseling
   
This course is designed to develop clinical competencies around the core skills identified as essential for
addictions counseling education: Screening, Intake, Orientation, Assessment, Treatment Planning,
Counseling, Case Management, Crisis Intervention, Client Education, Referral, Reports and Recordkeeping, a
nd Consultation (Ethics, Professional Issues, and Cultural Diversity).  The course will explore the subject of abuse
of alcohol, other drugs, and related issues and conditions. The course will provide students with specific skill
sets in each of the core functions areas. This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family core class
that will be taught in the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally specific approach
that addresses family relational issues. 

Minimum Degree Requirement:  GED

Ethics in Marriage & Family Therapy
 
Analysis of ethical issues facing the counseling practitioner in contemporary society, particularly in

the field of marriage and family therapy. This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family
core class that will be taught in the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally
specific approach that addresses family relational issues. 

Minimum Degree Requirement: Master

Treatment of Family Systems 
   
This course is designed to develop knowledge of family systems including the foundation, traditions,
practices, and applied concepts appropriate to family psychotherapy in detail.  Aspects of family
counseling technique and skills, foundations of various models of family therapy, and characteristics of
the counselor and client family processes will be covered in this course.  This course suffices a
requirement of a Marriage and Family core class that will be taught in the context of a systemic perspective
and contextually and culturally specific approach that addresses family relational issues.

Marriage & Family Therapy Overview
   
This course is designed to  give an overview of histories, traditions, normal practices, and applied concepts appropriate to
family psychotherapy in detail.  Aspects of family counseling technique and skills, foundations of various
models of family therapy, and characteristics of the counselor and client family processes will be covered
in this course. This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family core class that will be taught in
the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally specific approach that addresses
family relational issues.

Marriage and Family Therapy Theory

This course is designed to survey theoretical and applied concepts appropriate to family psychotherapy

in detail.  Aspects of family counseling technique and skills, various models of family therapy, and
characteristics of the counselor and client family processes specific to theory will be covered in this course.
This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family core class that will be taught in the context of
a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally specific approach that addresses family relational
issues.

Couples Counseling    
  
Acquaints the student with theories specific to the marital relationship/couples and executive subsystem of

families, historic perspective, lifestyles, and lifespan issues. This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage
and Family core class that will be taught in the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and
culturally specific approach that addresses family relational issues.

Play Therapy

This course is designed to acquaint graduate students with an overview of the history, major theories, concepts

and principles of play therapy. Play therapy techniques and practices will be discussed and used in experiential
activities. The course is recommended for graduate students in the mental health field, community counselors,
school counselors, and other clinicians or students who are interested in working with children and families in
a service delivery role. This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family core class that will be taught
in the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally specific approach that addresses family
relational issues. 

Minimum Degree Requirement: Master

Note:
This course carries an APT Provider number (10-278). It is approved for 67.5 CE credits toward the 150 hours required for the educational componenet to become an RPT. However, APT reserves the right to accept or deny or ask for clarification on any course offered by any provider. 

Principles & Practices of Sex Therapy    
  
Students acquire an understanding of human sexual response, sexual dysfunction, and concepts of sex therapies. A particular focus of this course will be the understanding of sexual behavior from a relational and systemic framework and within a sociocultural context. This course is designed to be a comprehensive overview of sexual issues presented by males, females, and couples in therapy. The course will emphasize the interaction among psychological, biological, and relationship factors in the treatment of sexual disorders.  Major areas of foci will be: assessment, case formulation, treatment planning, and intervention. This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family core class that will be taught in the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally specific approach that addresses family relational issues.

Diagnosis in Counseling

  
This course offers a clinical overview of the processes of diagnosing dysfunctional behaviors and mental states, in both school and community settings. Diagnosis in Counseling also surveys the characteristics and diagnosis of mental health disorders with reference to the current edition of Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders. Emphasis is placed on the development of diagnostic skills for the major disorders commonly encountered in social service, educational, and community counseling agencies. Brief reviews of treatment considerations for the major mental and emotional disorders will also be provided, and students will be provided with opportunities to explore initial counseling interactions through focused role-play activities and integration of theory, practice, research.

Family Psychopathology

This course is designed to develop knowledge on family psychopathology including the foundation, traditions, practices, and applied concepts appropriate to family psychotherapy in detail.  Aspects of family counseling technique and skills, foundations of various models of family therapy, and characteristics of the counselor and client family processes will be covered in this course.  This course suffices a requirement of a Marriage and Family core class that will be taught in the context of a systemic perspective and contextually and culturally specific approach that addresses family relational issues.

essential for peer recovery support education (CPRC): Screening, Intake, Orientation, Treatment
Planning, Counseling, Case Management, Crisis Intervention, Client Education, Referral, Reports
and Recordkeeping, and Consultation (Ethics, Professional Issues, and Cultural Diversity). The
course will explore the subject of abuse of alcohol, other drugs, and related issues and conditions.
The course will provide students with specific skill sets in each of the core functions areas. This
course satisfies the education requirements of the Alcohol & Drug Abuse Certification Board of
Georgia (ADACBGA) and the International Certification & Reciprocity Consortium (IC&RC). This
course is designed for peer-based services within a drug and alcohol related field. The Peer Support
Specialist promotes a collaborative relationship focused on strengths based model, person-centered approach, and Transtheoretical Model-Stages of Change.

Certified Peer Recovery Coach credentials through ADACBGA (IC & RC) or National Certified Peer Recovery Support Specialist through GACA (NADAC). This educational component does not credential the applicant to be certified under DBHDD standards as a Certified Peer Support Specialist or qualify an applicant to provide core (specialty) or straight Medicaid reimbursment. The applicant may secure employment in an 
EAP or private setting.
