SHANNON'S COUNSELING PHILOSOPHY
My overriding theoretical foundation is client-centered in approach from a systemic perspective. I believe that this is an umbrella from which other strategies and techniques can be implemented because it affords the client a comfortable, congruent environment in order to be assured an empathic, authentic, non-anxious presence in session. Sessions are based in a family systems approach, believing that the identified patient must by necessity be the family unit. This way of thinking about therapy allows me to choose from structural, strategic, transgenerational, experiential, cognitive-behavioral and narrative, and psychodynamic intervention approaches in order to address the specific presenting problem of the client, but always basing my interventions in a client-centered, family systems-oriented approaches.
